Where I’m From Homework Assignment

There are 3 parts to this assignment.

1.
Re-read examples from class here and here and here.

2.
Write some lists of your own that match the ones in Lyon’s poem.  You’ll be asked to share some of this list with the class.  Your list must include at least 30 items.

List . . .

  • Items found around your home (bobby pins, stacks of newspapers, grandma’s teeth, coupons, etc.)
  • Items found in your yard (broken rakes, dog bones, hoses coiled like green snakes – think of metaphors while you create these lists!)
  • Items found in your neighborhood (corner grocery store, Mr. Tate’s beat up Toyota, the magnolia tree)
  • Names of people who link you to the past
  • Sayings (“If I’ve told you once . . .”)
  • Names of food and dishes that make you think of home (tamales, black eyed peas, bbq, etc.)

3.
Write a poem using your list.  You must incorporate
ALL FIVE OF THE SENSES (SENSORY DETAILS),
2 SIMILES or METAPHORS,
2 instances of ALLITERATION
2 VOCAB WORDS from this year.

HW for Monday, 1/30

10 Minute Window Observation

Spend 10 minutes at home looking out a window.  Write down everything you see and hear.  What might it smell like out there?  Feel like?  Is there anything you can imagine tasting?

Type up a 10-15 line poem of your observation.  (This must be titled).  Be creative.  Try to use as many of the poetry techniques that we’ve reviewed this session as you can – imagery, alliteration, assonance, symbols, allusions, rhyme and rhythm (iambic pentameter!), etc.

AND!  One more catch – you muse use at least 4 vocabulary words from this year in your poem!
